Substance abuse & dependence is a very challenging clinical issue for multiple reasons. People may have an underlying mental illness and self medicate with drugs.
In addition, some people may have genetic predispositions and/or be affected by social environments that make substance abuse a normal part of life. Others may have felt unbearable emptiness in their souls and escape into drug induced states and fantasies just to “cope”.
As creatures of habits human beings are in general susceptible to addictions of different kinds. Physical and psychological withdrawal makes substance dependence very difficult to treat.
Due to the complicated nature of this condition, treatments almost inevitably fail without addressing issues at all human levels: biological, social, psychological, spiritual, and often, financial well-being as well.
At the Tao Institute we recognize the complicity of substance dependence and integrate all our services to help people with substance dependence. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is particularly valuable in reducing cravings and physical withdrawal symptoms.
